Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to provide students understanding of information needs of management (MIS), information technology (IT) are used by various business subsystems, and how information technology and can be used as a competitive resource.
Course Objectives:
There are several major objectives in this course:
(1)- To provide an understanding of the uses of information by operational subsystems such as production, finance, marketing, and personnel;
(2)- To analyze the information needs of tactical and strategic management, and the use of information systems to aid these managers in the decision making process (i.e., decision support system DSS, expert system ES, and artificial intelligence (AI);
(3)- To provide students with an understanding of the use of information systems to gain a competitive advantage by managing information as a resource;
(4)- To enable students to understand the role of electronic technology in the acquisition, production and distribution of goods and services throughout of the economy;
(5)- To enable students to identify, analyze and propose possible systems solutions to organizational problems.
Class Attendance Policy:
Regular attendance is expected. The Arkansas State University’s attendance policy on Undergraduate Bulletin, 2003-2004 will be strictly followed.
Grading:
The course grade will be determined as the following:
(1)- 5 short exams (if 5 exams, then the lowest will be dropped) = 40 %
(2)- Class attendance and Presentation of the cases = 30 %
(3)- Presentation (from the selected case studies and lectures) = 10 %
(4)- Final Exam (selected chapters) = 20 %
= 100 %
Please note that
1)-There will be one exam from each part of the book (2 to 4 chapters). One of these four exams or the one that has the lowest grade will be dropped at the end of semester. The final exam will be a comprehensive exam (from the selected chapters), students may be exempt from the final exam if they are satisfied with the all four previous grades of the four pre exams. Each student will be required to analyze one or more assigned cases (from end of each chapter) during the semester, and discuss his/her conclusions with the class.
2)- Cases --teams of one or two students, each are to be formed by a random number with a topic from a chapter are responsible for illustrating and presenting the cases (using PowerPoint) as an application of IT and MIS and then submitting the written answers as a Word – processed hardcopy.
3)- The instructor reserves the right to give unannounced quizzes or pop quizzes that will be averaged in with the exams grade.
Makeup Policy:
No make-up exam will be scheduled, since one of the exams (the lowest one) will be dropped at the end of semester.
